After so many weeks of hard work we spent a lovely relaxing week-end with the camper.
Our first stop was Breda, visiting a unique Elvis exhibition in Breda, the birthplace of colonel Parker, the manager of Elvis.
On the 26th of June, 100 years ago, this incredible man was born in Breda. The Elvis Matters Fan club, of which I am a member, organised the biggest Elvis Festival ever outside of Memphis USA.
100 years Parker , 1000 times Elvis was organised in a former monastery, dated back to 1501, now a big casino; times change, don’t they. The exhibition showed 1000 unique items from private collections, from his receipt of the first recording of My Happiness, 1953, to stage jewellery and suits that he wore on stage.
Next year Elvis would have been 75 years old and that was a reason for the fan club to organise a trip to Graceland.
You guessed it, that’s where we start off with the 2010 travels. We celebrate our wedding anniversary in Memphis and Las Vegas. But for now, back to Breda.
Breda is a lovely town, and wandering through the lovely centre we, to our surprise, ended up in the middle of the Dutch Veterans Day Celebration.
A great experience, the old soldiers from the Indonesian war and every other war after that, where the Dutch men did their duty.
I am not a believer in soldiers but it was impressive to see them honoured for their service by the mayor of Breda.
Had a lovely dinner at the Aussie restaurant ‘Down Under’ with a Toohey, to wash the food down.
Yep, even as far as up as Holland we still keep the Aussie spirit going.
The next day we went to Vaals, Limburg where we were going to an open air concert of a new rising Dutch star, Guido’s Orchestra.
It had been lovely weather for the past weeks, but Murphy was on the prowl again. By the end of the afternoon the skies opened up and all the rain that should have been fallen in the past few weeks poured down.
There were about 7000 people attending the show so we decided not to go with the camper but take the bike. It was about 2 k’s so we thought, was a good idea.
Well you know, Holland is a very flat country, but we do have one area that is a bit less flat, what we had forgotten was that the highest point is more than 100 feet, straight up in a very windy road. Packed as we were against the rain it ended up in a two hour endurance, not 2 k’s but 7 and ½.
We walked most of the way, encouraged by the drivers in their cars., but it was well worth it, the show was spectacular, it was recorded live and will be broadcasted from East to West coast in the USA.
The end of a lovely weekend, next holiday will be coming up shortly so stay tuned.
