After hosting the 1884 Cotton Exposition, which, though it proved to be a financial flop, marked the onset of a flourishing tourist industry in New Orleans.
The park was redeveloped and renamed for celebrated Haitian naturalist John James Audubon, who stayed at the city in 1821 while compiling his seminal “Birds of America”.
Today the 350-acre Audubon Park is a much-used beautiful park with lagoon and picnic areas, shaded by Spanish moss-swathed tree, an extensive cycling and jogging path and even an 18 hole golf link.
