In 2007 we started a memory tour that we shared with our followers on the Auskoogie blog. We have come a long way since then. The places where I lived with my family, the school and all the lovely friends we made along the way have all made my years in Australia come to life.
Some of you might still wonder why we chose the name Auskoogie.
This is the y of how it all began.
Still standing with one foot in Australia and living in the little Dutch village Koog the river Zaan just 10 k’s to the north of Amsterdam, I made the combination of Aus- Koog (ie).
As some of you know, I study history at the Amsterdam University and one morning I was wondering; “why not use my skills to really try and dig up some facts about my own life”. Well here’s what happened.
I ‘googled’ the web and found that there was still a Dutch Club in Adelaide. I wrote an e-mail to explain who I was with a request to locate anyone who after nearly 50 years remembered anything about me and my family.
The next day Gerrit de Vries, replied that he was a friend of my parents and had visited us many times. He told me that he would place a bulletin on the site of the Dutch club and hoped that it would come up with some names.
A few days later the reactions started filling my mailbox.
Albert Kramer, John van Dulken, Miep Hoeben-Nicolaas, Jenny van de Weide (Meadows) Albert van de Weide (Meadows).
Al these people, still remembering me and my family was an emotional experience. During these past 46 years in Holland there has been no one to share memories with and all because of one small message on the web my past has come alive.
In just two weeks time we are going Down Under again so join in with us again as we finish our memory tour.
Greetz to all

Joop Mul:
Yours is a kind of "private": 'Who Do You Think You Are?" (A tv show, here on SBS TV, where the SBS staff do so much of the work that you (two) have done / are doing yourself/yourselves!!)
Enjoy! Enjoy!!
It all "feels" a bit like the mirror-image of my experiences, as I very well remember my first 12 years in Gouda. But you are very well aware of this, as you kindly took me to the Paasheuvel, in Vierhouten, bringing a memory (back) to life.
Looking forward to (virtually) enjoying the ride with you!!
Joop
