Laura is a traditional Creole Plantation and the guide was pretty proud to call himself a Creole. The former slave quarters were very impressive. Reading about slavery is something different than standing on the site of where actually happened.
In the afternoon we went to the swamp, and really saw some ‘gators. They’re crazy on the marshmallows the guide was feeding them so we really got a good ‘show’.
The swam is spectacular, quiet, and somewhat creepy. The location was the ideal setting for the filming of “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The guide told us many stories, one special about a tree where people got married and of the life of the Cajun people who used to live in the swamp and kept pretty much out of ‘mainstream’ America. Many Cajuns still live off and on the river in their houseboats. Even saw some people swimming; no worries of alligators!!!
